FOUNDER/OWNER BARBELL UNION LLC
Matthew (Matt) Holden discovered Powerlifting in 2015 following his freshman soccer season at Eastern Mennonite University, where he was studying Exercise Science and Kinesiology. Torn between the two pursuits, Matt decided to do what he considered the unthinkable, which meant quitting soccer and focusing entirely on competing in Powerlifting. Shortly after dipping his toes in, he dove in head first offering "Powerlifting Coaching" to anyone who would trust him. Shortly after that, he founded Royals Lifting, a university sponsored club dedicated to promoting strength training to the university population.
Since then, Matt has competed several times himself; though, his main focus has always been on coaching. The past several years, he has worked with number of world-class and/or nationally-competitive Powerlifters, as he has continued to refine his approach to coaching. Additionally, since 2016 Matt has worked in various strength and conditioning settings, with his most recent work being as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach in Olympic Sports at James Madison University.
His combined work in Powerlifting and Strength and Conditioning has helped develop an understanding for both the nuances and commonalities that are seen among athletic populations. Also, with internship experience in pain management and rehab, Matt possesses an appreciation for the complexities of an athlete's experience, as well as an ability to manage and adjust training when things don't go exactly to plan. In 2023, Matt served as the Director of Online Coaching for Gameday Barbell, during which he regained an appreciation for leading in a Powerlifting context:
"For me, Barbell Union is the best way I can apply my personal beliefs, as well as lessons I was taught by my family, in my professional space. Lessons like "you work to live, you don't live to work" were taught to me from a young age and continue to inspire me as an adult. I'm committed to prioritizing that mantra and passing it on to the coaches here at Barbell Union by doing the following: paying coaches fairly, selling services that provide coaches with sustainable work-loads, and supporting continued education and operation efforts for the coaches, among other things."
Matt is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the NSCA and is currently enrolled as a graduate student in the Nutrition and Physical Activity Master program at James Madison University, where he is completing his thesis work. Outside of work, Matt and his wife live in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia with their two Dutch Shepherds who they spoil endlessly.
